India Seychelles Business and Cultural Council
About Seychelles
Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa. Known for its
stunning beaches, coral reefs, nature reserves, and rare wildlife, it’s a tropical paradise. The
capital, Victoria, is on Mahé, the largest island, which also hosts an international airport and a
majority of the population.
Seychelles has a rich history influenced by African, Asian, and European cultures. Discovered by the
Portuguese in the 16th century, it was later colonized by the French and then the British before
gaining independence in 1976. Creole, English, and French are the official languages.
The economy is primarily driven by tourism, fishing, and agriculture. The government has worked to
diversify into sectors like offshore banking and renewable energy. The country boasts a high Human
Development Index (HDI) and strong environmental conservation policies.
Seychelles is renowned for its efforts in marine conservation and sustainable tourism. Protected
areas like the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Aldabra Atoll support unique
ecosystems. The climate is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round and two main seasons
influenced by the monsoons.
Despite its small size, Seychelles is a vibrant nation known for its natural beauty, cultural
diversity, and commitment to sustainability.
